How To Visualise For Actors: 2023

Ok here's exactly how I do it - remember this sh*t works!

First i am going to take you through my own visualisation technique which is kind of a mix of NLP and inspired ideas from others...and THEN i am going to share with you some of the people who inspire me and how THEY visualise to manifest their dreams...

My Visualisation Technique for Actors

How to visualize effectively

You're an actor right? You use your imagination all the time, right?

So...You're going to create a 3-Dimensional movie on the screen of your mind. 'K? This will enhance your power of visualisation.

A : Close your eyes.

Imagine you are sitting in a movie theatre and on the huge 3-D Imax screen up and in front of you is a large colourful movie of you doing the exact thing you desire...

See yourself on the screen of your mind doing the precise thing you want...(the audition, self tape, meeting with agent) and notice that all is going exceptionally  well...

Now, notice with great clarity the details of your actions, the colour of your clothing, the confident smile behind your eyes, the small shifts of your body movements, any gentle precise hand gestures...

and notice the entranced expressions on the face of the Casting Director, the cameraman, the reader...

Next, blend in any sounds you hear, people chatting softly, the sound of traffic in the distance, the sound of water flowing if you are near water, get the idea...? the more specificity the better...include the sound of an encouraging supportive voice inside your mind encouraging you onwards...

...a lot of actors tell me they can hear my voice inside their mind supporting and cheering them on, and if that works for you go ahead and know that you can do this can't you?

Finally bring into this movie a layer of feeling. Visualise your body experiencing the desired feelings you wish to experience, like a powerful confidence flowing effortlessly and easily over your body...a gentle softness in your muscles, relaxation cascading from the top of your head to the tips of your toes...as you radiate energy...

B. In your minds eye get out of your seat in the movie theatre, walk up to the screen, open a door in the movie screen and and step right into the movie as if you have entered the scene, imagine it is happening right here right now...

Experience the entire experience again looking out through your own eyes. This is called an “associated position” rather than the dissociated image you used in step A. This will deepen the impact of the experience going on inside your mind and body system. Again, see everything in vivid 3-D detail, hear the sounds you would hear, and feel the feelings you would feel.

C. Finally, step out of the movie screen that is still showing the picture of you performing your acting audition or self tape session perfectly, return to your seat in the movie theatre...then...

Reach out and grab the screen and shrink it down to the size of a small biscuit in your favourite colour.

Now pop this perfect little coloured biscuit inside your mouth and chomp it up and swallow it whole.

Imagine that each tiny glitteringly coloured piece of biscuit — just like a glittering 3-dimensional quark particle or even a magical kind of multi faceted hologram contains the whole experience of you performing at your absolute best.

Picture thousands upon thousands of these miniature screens moving in and and out and around and through your bloodstream and into every single cell and every atom of of your body.

Now imagine that every cell, very atom of your whole physical, mental and spiritual body is lit up by a myriad of glittering 3-d colourful, moving movies in perfect surround sound of you performing at your absolute best.

Imagine a shop window with 1000 TV's are all tuned to the exactly the same channel and are all showing exactly the same movie.

So you could record that onto your smartphone couldn't you?

Carry it with you? Yes?

Practice micro screenings inside your mind every night you go to sleep and notice the way the screen get bigger and bolder and more and more centred and certain day after day....

How to Use Meditation to Visualise Your Goals

One of the most inspiring and powerful things you can do as a human being is to visualise what it is that you want to manifest, and then make it happen. The power of the mind is astonishing and, when coupled with mindfulness-based practices like meditation, you can increase your ability to make leaps and bounds toward creating the life you truly desire.

Goal setting is the catalyst for making this happen. The purpose of setting a goal is to achieve a desired result. When applied carefully with intention, action, momentum, and focus, setting and achieving goals gets you from where you are now to where it is you want to be.

But first you have to know where that is. The “where” begins with your vision.

The first step is to start with the end in mind and work backward. The end result is your highest vision for a given area of life—be it health and fitness, relationship, family, career, or finance. Once connected with your vision, you then need to set specific goals that will aid you in actualising the vision.

Many people mistake the goal for the vision thinking the goal is the end result. They set a goal without thinking ahead to what that goal will allow them to be, to do, or to have in the long run.

To make the most out of your goal-setting process, it’s important to link it up to the quality of lifestyle you want to be living. For the purpose of creating some clarity, let’s outline the key differences between a vision and a goal.

Your Vision vs. Your Goal

Your vision isn’t something that needs to be created—it already exists within you. You just need to get in touch with it. Your vision is the big picture of your desired outcomes. It’s an internal representation of what is most important to you; it’s exciting, inspiring, compelling, and filled with positive emotions.

A goal, on the other hand, is a specifically designed milestone that requires completion if you are to get to the end of your yellow brick road. The downside is that a goal may not necessarily provoke positive emotions. Goals are simply stepping stones on the path that lead you to your ultimate destination.

A popular and effective way to set goals is to use the acronym SMART, which stands for specific (clear and precise), measurable (you can quantify or measure progress), achievable (meaning, it’s realistic), resources (you have the resources needed and you aren’t relying on divine intervention or other people), and time (there is a start and end date).

Using highly detailed, vivid imagery is an extremely powerful way to train the mind to go after—and get—what you want. Professional athletes use mental visualization to help them become more agile in their game. For example, Tiger Woods has been using visualisation techniques to improve his game since he was a teenager, and World Champion Golfer, Jack Nicklaus, was quoted as having said, “I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp in-focus picture of it in my head.”

Former NBA All-Star, Michael Jordan, used mental imagery to get into what he referred to as “the zone” to make his game-winning, three-point shots. Many public speakers practice anchoring themselves to a state of motivation prior to taking the stage in front of their audiences.

If professional athletes and stage presenters use visualisation techniques to enhance their ability to be the best of the best, you too can utilise this approach to making your own dreams come true.

Meditation Steps for Achieving Your Goals

Try the following steps to practice a guided visualisation on putting a goal into the future:

  • Begin with an area of your life in mind. Choose an area where you have been struggling or would like to experience some transformation.
  • Now begin to imagine the highest possible outcome that you would like to be living in this area of your life 6 to 12 months from now.
  • Imagine living your life the way you would envision if all your hopes and dreams were to come true.

What is your ultimate reality? Try not to get hung up on limitations or negativity; instead, just allow yourself to get carried away with your wildest aspirations.

  • Next, connect with one goal you would like to achieve in the next three months. Make it a good one. If you choose a goal that doesn’t carry a lot of weight or isn’t all that meaningful, the end result (if you even bother getting there) won’t feel all that special.
  • So be sure to choose something that is big enough that, once you’ve carried out this goal, you will be left with a high level of accomplishment and feeling motivated to set your next goal. Run the goal through the SMART acronym to make sure it meets the proper criteria. Then, you’re set!

Now that you’ve connected with your goal, imagine what your life will be like once you have completed it.

  • Create a picture or movie in your mind and step inside the visual representation as if you are inside it and looking through your own eyes.
  • Adjust all of the qualities of sensory perception (taste, touch, sight, sound, smell) to create the most positive and most real feelings. Who is there with you? Where are you? What is happening around you?
  • Next, step out of the image you’ve created and imagine floating up in the air above where you are now, taking the mental image with you. Take a deep inhale and as you exhale, use your breath to energise the image, filling it with positive energy and intention. Do this five times.

Now it’s time to imagine floating out into the future and visualise dropping the internal representation of your goal down into your life below you at the date and time you’ve set for this goal to reach completion.

  • Notice how all the events between then and now re-evaluate themselves to support you in accomplishing your goal. Visualise this process to make it feel real.
  • Once you feel complete, come back to now and, with your eyes still closed, consider what action steps you will take in the next week to move you closer to your goal.
  • Take a few deep breaths to ground yourself before opening your eyes. Write down your list of action steps and do any journaling about your experience.

Last, you must take action and maintain your focus. Every single day, do something that moves you closer to realising your goal and living your dream.

Do this process once a week or upon completion of your action steps so that you continue moving powerfully forward toward achieving your goal and living your vision. Seeing is believing, so use your mind to create your most compelling future.

Well that's fine for you but I CANNOT VISUALISE!

Visualisation Techniques by Jack Canfield

Here is Jacks website

Visualisation techniques have been used by successful people to visualise their desired outcomes for ages.

The practice has even given some high achievers what seems like super-powers, helping them create their dream lives by accomplishing one goal or task at a time with hyper focus and complete confidence.

In fact, we all have this awesome power, but most of us have never been taught to use it effectively.

Elite athletes use it. The super-rich use it. And peak performers in all fields now use it. That power is called visualisation.

The daily practice of visualising your dreams as already complete can rapidly accelerate your achievement of those dreams, goals, and ambitions.

Using visualisation techniques to focus on your goals and desires yields four very important benefits.

1.) It activates your creative subconscious which will start generating creative ideas to achieve your goal.

2.) It programs your brain to more readily perceive and recognise the resources you will need to achieve your dreams.

3.) It activates the law of attraction, thereby drawing into your life the people, resources, and circumstances you will need to achieve your goals.

4.) It builds your internal motivation to take the necessary actions to achieve your dreams.

Visualisation is really quite simple. You sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes and imagine — in as vivid detail as you can — what you would be looking at if the dream you have were already realised. Imagine being inside of yourself, looking out through your eyes at the ideal result.

Visualise with the ‘Mental Rehearsal’ Technique

For athletes, visualisation process is called “mental rehearsal,” and they have been using these exercises since the 1960s when we learned about it from the Russians.

All you have to do is set aside a few minutes a day. The best times are when you first wake up, after meditation or prayer, and right before you go to bed. These are the times you are most relaxed.

Go through the following three steps:

STEP 1. Imagine sitting in a movie theater, the lights dim, and then the movie starts. It is a movie of you doing perfectly whatever it is that you want to do better. See as much detail as you can create, including your clothing, the expression on your face, small body movements, the environment and any other people that might be around.

Add in any sounds you would be hearing — traffic, music, other people talking, cheering. And finally, recreate in your body any feelings you think you would be experiencing as you engage in this activity.

STEP 2. Get out of your chair, walk up to the screen, open a door in the screen and enter into the movie. Now experience the whole thing again from inside of yourself, looking out through your eyes.

This is called an “embodied image” rather than a “distant image.” It will deepen the impact of the experience. Again, see everything in vivid detail, hear the sounds you would hear, and feel the feelings you would feel.

STEP 3. Finally, walk back out of the screen that is still showing the picture of you performing perfectly, return to your seat in the theater, reach out and grab the screen and shrink it down to the size of a cracker. Then, bring this miniature screen up to your mouth, chew it up and swallow it. Imagine that each tiny piece — just like a hologram — contains the full picture of you performing well. Imagine all these little screens traveling down into your stomach and out through the bloodstream into every cell of your body.

Then imagine that every cell of your body is lit up with a movie of you performing perfectly. It’s like one of those appliance store windows where 50 televisions are all tuned to the same channel.

When you have finished this process — it should take less than five minutes — you can open your eyes and go about your business. If you make this part of your daily routine, you will be amazed at how much improvement you will see in your life.

Create Goal Pictures

Another powerful visualisation technique is to create a photograph or picture of yourself with your goal, as if it were already completed. If one of your goals is to own a new car, take your camera down to your local auto dealer and have a picture taken of yourself sitting behind the wheel of your dream car.

Sidebar from Nick

Read this from my client, actor Lochlann O'Mearain...

Does visualisation really work? Ask Lochlann...

"Hi Nick,

Just a quick note to say thank you and keep it up as it works, I will explain.

January in a time of very little work and I must say probably lacking confidence I went through the T.A.M. (Total Audition Magician) manual and followed all the exercises . Now September, I began leafing through my diary until I came across the Precise End Step and could hardly believe it.

It read....

I see myself at the airport long term parking, sitting into my Saab with full leather trim, checking my messages from my new London agent, a pile of scripts sides and call sheets in my bag, e-mail from wardrobe on my next TV show looking for sizes, racing back to make a studio on Baggot St in time for my VO, all after having wrapped on another TV show.

Well, currently I am in London working with James Nesbitt on Lucky Man for SKY Atlantic, my blue Saab with leather trim was delivered last Saturday, I have an offer from a respectable Boutique agency on Warwick St, I am needed for the new campaign of radio ads for Nissan when I get back and I am meeting Debbie McWilliams (casting) on Tuesday for a series regular on a Cable TV show . and yes my bag is stuffed with call sheets, sides and highlighted scripts.
So thanks Nick,

Time to write a new and Precise End Step ..
Stay great

Lochlann

If your goal is to visit Paris, find a picture or poster of the Eiffel Tower and cut out a picture of yourself and place it into the picture.

Create a Visual Picture and an Affirmation for Each Goal

We recommend that you find or create a picture of every aspect of your dream life. Create a picture or a visual representation for every goal you have — financial, career, recreation, new skills and abilities, things you want to purchase, and so on.

When we were writing the very first Chicken Soup for the Soul® book, we took a copy of the New York Times best seller list, scanned it into our computer, and using the same font as the newspaper, typed Chicken Soup for the Soul into the number one position in the “Paperback Advice, How-To and Miscellaneous” category.

We printed several copies and hung them up around the office. Less than two years later, our book was the number one book in that category and stayed there for over a year. Now that’s a pretty solid example of a successful visualisation technique!

You want to take your visualisation to the next level, right?

Index Cards

We practice a similar discipline every day. We each have a list of about 30-40 goals we are currently working on. We write each goal on a 3×5 index card and keep those cards near our bed and take them with us when we travel. Each morning and each night we go through the stack of cards, one at a time, read the card, close our eyes, see the completion of that goal in its perfect desired state for about 15 seconds, open our eyes and repeat the process with the next card.

Use Affirmations to Support Your Visualisation

An affirmation is a statement that evokes not only a picture, but the experience of already having what you want. Here’s an example of an affirmation:

I am happily vacationing 2 months out of the year in a tropical paradise, and working just four days a week owning my own business.

Repeating an affirmation several times a day keeps you focused on your goal, strengthens your motivation, and programs your subconscious by sending an order to your crew to do whatever it takes to make that goal happen.

Expect Results

Through writing down your goals, using the power of visualisation and repeating your daily affirmations, you can achieve amazing results.

Visualisation and affirmations allow you to change your beliefsassumptions, and opinions about the most important person in your life — YOU! They allow you to harness the 18 billion brain cells in your brain and get them all working in a singular and purposeful direction.

Your subconscious will become engaged in a process that transforms you forever. The process is invisible and doesn’t take a long time. It just happens over time, as long as you put in the time to visualize and affirm, practice your techniques, surround yourself with positive people, read uplifting books and listen to audio programs that flood your mind with positive, life-affirming messages.

How to Spend the 10 Most Important Minutes of Your Day

Harness the Subconscious Mind with Visualisation Techniques

Visualisation – seeing the goal as already complete in your mind’s eye – is a core technique used by the world’s most successful people. Visualisation is effective because it harnesses the power of our subconscious mind.

When we visualise goals as complete, it creates a conflict in our subconscious mind between what we are visualising and what we currently have. Our minds are hard-wired to resolve such conflicts by working to create a current reality that matches the one we have envisioned.

Visualisation activates the creative powers of the subconscious mind, motivating it to work harder at creating solutions. You’ll also notice new levels of motivation and find yourself doing things that normally you would avoid, but that will take you closer to success.

The third way visualisation boosts success is by programming the Reticular Activating System (RAS), which serves as a mental filter for the 8 million bits of information that are streaming into our brains at any one time. (To learn more about the RAS, refer to Principle 11 in The Success Principles.)

The RAS thinks in pictures, not words. Daily visualisation feeds the RAS the pictures it needs to start filtering information differently. As a result, your RAS will start to pay attention to anything that might help you achieve your goals – information that it otherwise might ignore.

Live in the Moment

Although a daily practice of visualisation is vital, we don’t need to spend all day thinking about our goals for this technique to work. In fact, spending too much time in visualisation can rob you of something essential – living in the moment.

Daily rituals help to establish the right balance between thinking about the future and living in the moment. Start by picking a time during which you’ll review your goals and visualize your success. Ideally, do this twice a day – first thing in the morning and right before you go to bed. The process typically will take 10 minutes or less.

If you meditate, guided or not, do your visualisations immediately after your meditation. The deepened state reached during meditation heightens the impact of visualisation.

For greatest effect, read your goals or affirmations out loud. After each one, close your eyes and create the visual image of the completed goal in your mind.

To multiply the effects, add sound, smells, and tastes. Most importantly, add the emotions and bodily sensations you would be feeling if you had already achieved your goal.

This is a powerful visualisation technique.

Research has revealed that images or scenes that are accompanied by intense emotion will stay locked in our memory forever. The more passion, excitement and energy we muster during visualisation, the more powerful the results will be.

Once you have visualised each goal as complete, it’s time to release. Let go of your goals, and spend the rest of your day being in the present moment.

Be Present Instantly

An easy way to instantly become present is to focus on your bodily sensations. It’s impossible to focus on our bodies and be in the past or the future at the same time.

Here are some examples. Focus on your left foot right now. What are you feeling? Pay attention to the sensation for a minute. Then notice what you’re feeling in your right foot, and spend a few moments really feeling the sensation. If you were able to pay attention to your feet, congratulations. You were absolutely present.

If you find your mind drifting to the future throughout the day, you can use one of the more basic visualisation techniques. Just let go of any fears or worries that arise. Shift your thoughts to what you want the future to look like when you get there. Then bring your awareness back to the moment.

As the saying goes, “Today is a gift—that’s why it’s called the present.” Use visualisation techniques to achieve your goals, but invest the majority of your time enjoying the gift of today.

Repeat your affirmations every morning and night for a month and they will become an automatic part of your thinking… woven into the very fabric of your being.

If you would like a step-by-step, comprehensive approach for defining your goals, creating affirmations for them and living the life of your dreams, take a look at my free Affirmations for Success Guide pdf.

Just add your dreams!

And now for Mel Robbins....

10 QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU VISUALISE YOUR FUTURE

Mel Robbins
January 9, 2019

I’ve talked a lot about how visualisation helps you create the future you want. This powerful tool has made a difference for me in my own life, when as an out-of-work-lawyer-turned-executive life coach, I saw myself on a TED stage one day, sharing with others how I changed my life.

In my vision I was wearing a better colour, my neck was not so blotchy, and my pits weren’t so sweaty, but seeing myself on that stage was the catalyst that got me doing the work to get there. That vision was the reason I kept such a laser focus toward opportunities that presented themselves, and it’s that vision that got me to take a few chances and step outside my comfort zone.

Having a vision changed my expectations, and that was key.

I began to EXPECT better of myself. I knew that if the future I wanted was going to become reality, I had to change what I was doing now.

Since that TED talk, my life and business have blown up and now I’m on my way toward the vision I started while still in high school to host a daytime talk show.

Which means a whole new set of expectations has arisen for me.

So I’m back to visualising.

Does visualizstion guarantee that your future will turn out exactly as you wish?

I wish.

Life has no guarantees, unfortunately, and success is a combination of hard work, grit, and even luck. But the more you stay the course, the more likely you push yourself further down the line and learn a hell of a lot about yourself in the process.

But I get that visualisation is not easy for everyone and it does take practice.

To help you see your future, I’ve put together this list of questions to ask yourself. Whether it’s one year or five, use this list to jumpstart your personal expectations and next steps. Some of them may be challenging to answer, and that is on purpose. Each question is designed to help you visualise the PROCESS for getting to where you want to be, as much as the outcome.

Answer each question as if you are living your ideal future in 5 years:

1. When somebody asks what you do for work, how do you respond?

2. Describe your physical surroundings in as much detail as possible. Where are you working? Where do you live? Where do you spend your free time?

3. Describe the people surrounding you–in your business and personal life.

4. What is the atmosphere in your business and personal life? How do you contribute to that atmosphere?

5. What are you most proud of?

6. What is your favorite way to spend your downtime?

7. When somebody asks you for mentoring advice, what do you tell them?

8. Describe the steps you had to take to get to where you are.

9. Do you have any regrets? Explain.

10. What would you have done differently to get here?

Once you have your vision, tap into some powerful research out of UCLA.

Researchers found that visualising yourself doing the steps it takes to reach your vision makes you more likely to succeed. In the study, people who visualized themselves studying received better scores than those who visualised a positive grade.

You can apply this research to your own visualisation and goals for the future. Once you answer the questions above and have your vision, write down or think about the steps that you will need to take to get there. What exactly will you need to do?

Then, it’s time to tap into the power of visualisation. Each day, visualise BOTH the future that you want–and picture yourself doing the steps to get there.
